SPES decided to combine the month of November Web Page and December 97 updates to be able to wish you all Cyber friends wherever you may be in the world:

SEPAC/SADC Executive Board Meeting

November was an interesting month with an executive Board Meeting in Gaborone, Botswana organised by the FES (Friedrich Ebert Stiftung) Secretariat of SEPAC/SADC (Small Enterprise Promotion Advisory Council/Southern African Development Community).

It was decided to strengthen the objectives of SEPAC for the global improvement of Small Scale Enterprises conditions, and also human capacity-building empowerment for sustainable development, through appropriate technology transfers and New Generation IT communications integrated to interactive transnational projects.

Infotech 97

At the national level, SPES took an active part at the Infotech 97, a major IT event, where we engaged in collaborative educational/vocational demonstrations, using Macintosh and Apple computers with new connectivity to PCs for school, office work and graphics. SPES organised an historic gathering of local Linguist Experts, who focused on innovative high-tech tools and enjoyed handwriting on a touch sensitive screen and also used multi-media special computer programmes to communicate in the following commonly spoken languages in Mauritius:

  • Arabic/Calligraphy
  • Modern Chinese
  • Hindi and Bhojpuri
  • Gujrati
  • Creole
  • French
  • English

Visiting children were also very enthusiastic with this high-tech educational “hands on” experience and some even said aloud: “I hope Father Christmas will give me a computer!” Let us hope the latter now surfs on Internet…
