NGO SINCE 1967

Our History

SPES (Society for the Promotion of Specialized Enterprises) was founded in 1967, first with the “Ecoles Ménagères/Household Schools” by a group of volunteers whose initial goal was to move to the training and emergence of specialized companies in order to create employment for people from vulnerable backgrounds.

In 1979, an Act of Parliament ratified this statute.

Among the founding members/volunteers were personalities of great stature including Sir Maurice Rault, Sir Maurice Paturau, Dr. Yip Tong, Mr. Hassam Vayid, Dr.M. Avrillon, Mrs. Devi Veesamy and others who gathered around Mr. Gaetan Langlois and his wife Helena. The latter, who is a Psychologist and Founding Member of the World Craft Council, is now the Chairperson/CEO of the organization.

OUR MISSION

Improving Lives

SPES receives no assistance from the government, preferring to work in self-sufficiency and with the help of generous donors. Several programmes have been set up with the help of UNESCO.

Over time and in line with global trends towards improving the state of the planet through eco-friendly development, SPES managers through their e-training” team have further researched and introduced cyber-innovations into our training sectors.

Since 1981, SPES has invested in electronic equipment that enables high-quality screen printing, an idea that has since been taken up by many entrepreneurs who have made it their success. In 1987, SPES acquired a Design software to launch two years later, a training unit in High Technology Design using the CAD (Computor Aided Design) as a tool, mainly in the Textile field but also with 3D programs for working Wood and Ceramics. Textile manufacturers were thus able to benefit from this training to develop... and create new jobs.

Our Programs

Continuing its momentum, SPES has set up “e-Classrooms" for accelerated basic literacy as well as the acquisition of skills in eco-crafts.

“Local Color” is a program using natural fibers and dyes from local plants to create jobs in the field of crafts and textiles for the tourist market.

Road Prudent Behaviour is another program that uses an interactive electronic table illustrating road traffic with the use of miniature vehicles and electronic instruction manuals to teach children the basics of responsible behaviour on the roads to ensure their safety from an early age.

“AVR: Augmented Virtual Reality”: This program is used in a Cyber Café – free for underprivileged children and others – using state-of-the-art equipment, including a 3D camera.
Robotics was introduced in 2010 by Professor Hiroshi of the University of Tokyo. He will return soon to present another of his latest inventions. SPES’ objectives are to promote the use of cutting-edge technologies for research and training as well as cultural exchanges and marketing and marketing assistance for local crafts and local products to help people break out of the vicious cycle of poverty.
THE e-MOBILITY PROGRAM

Moving Into the 21st Century

To celebrate its 53rd. anniversary and in memory of the late Mr. Gaëtan Langlois, who sponsored this project, SPES, whose initials are similar to the word ESPERO… ESPOIR (HOPE), has the pleasure and honour of presenting an innovative and unique program that will meet the United Nations guidelines on 0% AIR POLLUTION by proving that the technology exists for the use of renewable energy to be actively promoted for the future of our planet.

The e-MOBILITY program includes the start-up:

From our “e-Bus” … the first electric bus to arrive in Mauritius at the end of last year, which is intended by its special configuration to become a mobile, silent and non-polluting classroom whose electric motor will be recharged by solar panels placed on the roof of the building.

A 3-seat electric “e-Trike” Tricycle – equipped with its solar panel

And on the sea:

Our “e-Boat”, entirely imagined and conceived for SPES by one of its honourary directors Marcel Lindsay Noë, who was ranked 38 on the Top 100 list of Movers & Shakers by the international organisation “e-learning Africa”, designed and planned by the legendary Pierre Sénèque, is being built on the mythical construction site of Gervais Lamarque, the artisanal builder of traditional canoes from father to son. All this will give work to the residents of Mahébourg.

The “e-Boat” will be powered by the first electric outboard motors to be introduced in Mauritius from Germany. They will be powered by batteries recharged by solar panels. In addition to 0% air and noise pollution, the e-boat will produce its pure water from the atmosphere and all the utensils used on board will be plant-based and fully recyclable.
