Damascus International Declaration on Arabesque in Crafts on the Islamic World
The following future directions related to Arabesque in the Islamic World were issued as an outcome of the Damascus Seminar as follows:
  • Aware of the importance for discussing measures to be taken to guard against the loss of Islamic values and traditions with a view towards maintaining the uniqueness of Islamic Crafts heritage
  • Realising the need for the preservation, protection and dissemination of Arabesque as a generous spiritual heritage
  • Recognizing the importance of the availability of the necessary data for the enhancement of this field through collaborative efforts by all concerned - establishments, government authorities and local, official, international bodies
  • Realizing the necessity of financing for collective and collaborative patronage in financing project implementations desired for the development of Arabesque on a global scope

We hereby declare the following:
  • Call for the establishment of an International Training Center for Arabesque of OIC Countries for training, qualifying and educating craftspeople of the Islamic World in traditional and updated methods, techniques and styles in craft production.
  • Appeal to member countries and International Finance establishments and Organizations to support this Center with equipment and other needs which would support the Craftspeople in their endeavor.
  • Call for establishing an international Fund to ensure a permanent income for the continuity of the activities of the Center
  • Encouraging young artisans through organized competitions and awards as an incentive for production of outstanding creative works.
  • Request the Syrian Ministry of Culture in Syria and the Research Center for Islamic History, Art and Culture (IRCICA), Istanbul, OIC to circulate this declaration to member organizations and use it as a reference in future conferences and seminars.
  • Call for improving the status of craftspeople and the creators of Arabesque, as well as putting measures for appreciating and respecting the role they play in society, their being an essential element in the preservation of the Islamic heritage and giving them the high status they deserve in the society.
  • Initiation of marketing channels through access to exhibitions at available exhibition halls.
  • Provision of due concern to the establishment of training and qualifying programs for craftspeople before and during activities work in studios and workshops.
  • Appeal to communication media to reinforce awareness and appreciation towards craftspeople and the importance of their role in keeping the Arabesque heritage alive.
